"Max Jacob and Julien Lanoë met in 1925 with Jean Cocteau, in order to create a title for the literary review Lanoë wanted to found in Nantes ; it was to be La Ligne de cœur. But the real friendship between Jacob and Lanoë began one dark night in 1926, in Max Jacob’s room in Saint-BenoÎt-sur-Loire, when the Max Jacob dashed off two poems for the review, thus creating a pen name for himself, Morven le Gaëlique. The friendship between the two men grew until Max Jacob’s death in 1944. The review only lasted a few years, but the Poèmes de Morven le Gaëlique would be published in 1953. Their letters discuss the poetry and art of the era, as well as their own works. Lanoë hoped to produce a play by Jacob, and twice exhibited his paintings in the Museum of Fine Arts in Nantes. The last fifty letters describe Lanoë’s family life in Nantes, and the hard life of Max Jacob, obliged to wear the yellow star required of Jews during the Nazi occupation. "
