This collection of essays addresses art collecting in its multifarious historical aspects - from the Middle Ages to the Nineteenth century - and typologies. It analyses the inception of new collectable genres, and the functions of art collecting. The sources and methods used for its study are explored, together with the mutual conditioning of historical context, historical reconstruction as well as reputation of a given artist, type of object, class and chronology of works.
