In Early Modern Age, the Mediterranean area functioned as a free zone for two exceptional cultural experiences, those of the Ottoman Empire and of the Italian Renaissance. Interactions, emulations, gifts, and offerings, connected the Italian courts and the ‘Sublime Porte’. This book can be read as a phenomenology of gift: a deep historical analysis of the relationship between Italy and the Ottoman Empire, through their handicrafts, their artists, their artworks.
